Pack Mules

Laying out your kit The same old conundrum, what do you take? Well, ask 100 people and they will probably tell you a myriad of different answers, albeit some necessities are always a good idea.

The picture on the left was the equipment that I squeezed into my panniers when I embarked on a 4 week trip around Europe and Morocco, with the Horizons Unlimited Mountain Madness event thrown in for good measure.

All of what you see went into two 35 litre panniers. My clothes went into a waterproof duffel bag (the Tribord ones from Decathlon are perfect and don’t break the bank), I also took a 5 litre jerry can which we ended up throwing away and some throw over tank panniers that I thought would be good for carrying water and quick to get to stuff… Needless to say, the spectre of over preparation was lurking around and by the time we got back, most of it had been left behind at friends in Southern Spain. Punctures? None  (more wasted space for inner tubes) . Miles? Approximately 5000. Breakdowns? None.

We will be posting a thorough guide an what to take for various tours/trips for those that want to know.

2010 Trans America Tour

Our Trans America Tour 2010 starts in San Francisco on 12th June. We have 12 bikes on this Adventure and they were all loaded onto a container last week and will be delivered to Marin BMW in San Francisco on 8th June. They were all packed safely into the container using straps and re-usable air bags bike-loading between the bikes to ensure they all arrive undamaged and ready for the trip across the USA. bike-loading1

The route will take us through some of the most scenic places in the US such as Yosemite, Death Valley, Zion and Bryce Canyons and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We will also travel through some remote and often unvisited towns across the US and will see and meet the real people who live there. We will also spend some time with the Navajo Indians in Arizona which will no doubt be a highlight of this fantastic trip.

We hope you enjoy reading through our blog as we travel across the United States and Chris will be updating daily.
